Empowering Green Energy Development in Africa: Tools Optimization & Policy Workshop
The JUST-GREEN AFRH2ICA project had the privilege of participating in the “Empowering Green Energy Development in Africa: Tools Optimization & Policy Workshop” on November 27, 2024, held at the University Mohammed Premier (UMP) in Oujda, Morocco. This event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including policymakers, academics, industry leaders, and civil society representatives, all united with a common goal: to co-design innovative tools that will drive Africa’s clean energy transition.
Throughout the workshop, participants engaged in hands-on activities focused on refining three key EMERGE tools—CEPIA, Hosting Capacity, and GREENADVISE. These tools were carefully examined to ensure they align with the specific energy goals and challenges faced by African nations. Scenario-building exercises provided a platform for discussions, exploring how these tools can play a pivotal role in advancing sustainable energy development across the continent.
A highlight of the event was a dynamic panel session focused on overcoming policy barriers to green energy development. Chaired by David Arinze from Diamond Development Initiatives, the discussion featured insightful contributions from Stefano Barberis of University of Genoa and Alae-eddine Barkaoui from Université Mohammed Premier Oujda. The panel addressed crucial topics, such as bridging policy gaps, attracting investment through innovative financing mechanisms, and enhancing regional cooperation for energy integration. These discussions provided participants with actionable insights and practical strategies for overcoming the policy and financing barriers that often impede the green energy transition in Africa.
The workshop also included a dynamic conversation, where participants shared valuable lessons learned from their experiences and identified opportunities for future collaboration. The use of interactive tools like Mentimeter helped foster dynamic engagement between onsite and online attendees, ensuring that all voices were heard.
Among the key takeaways from the workshop were concrete recommendations for reforming energy policies to attract investment, as well as strengthened collaboration opportunities between African and international stakeholders to accelerate green energy development.
The workshop was a significant step forward for the JUST-GREEN AFRH2ICA project, which is driving the green hydrogen revolution by promoting collaboration, innovation, and shared progress.
